behavior of rockfill materials in triaxial compression testing

چکیده
this paper studies thoroughly and deeply the results of about one hundred triaxial compression tests on thirty types of rockfill materials. the materials are categorized in accordance with their particles shape (angular / rounded) and gradation characteristics. the main tool of the study is the hyperbolic model developed by duncan and chang. the focus of the study is on the variations of deformation modulus of the materials (ei and et) with confining stress (&sigma3;). features of the mechanical behavior of the rockfill materials, as compared with the general behavior of soils, are highlighted through the exponent parameter (n) of the hyperbolic model. it is shown that high confining stresses may have adverse effects on the deformation modulus of the rockfill materials and make them softer. the particle breakage phenomenon which happens during compression and shearing is found as the main factor responsible for the above effects and, in general, responsible for controlling the behavior of the materials. for the rockfill materials of this study, two correlations for estimating the initial elasticity modulus (ei) and the internal friction angle (φ) in terms of particles shape, confining pressure (&sigma3;), and coefficient of uniformity (cu) are suggested.

Mechanical behavior of human morselized cancellous bone in triaxial compression testing.
Despite its widespread use as graft material in orthopaedic surgical procedures, morselized cancellous bone has not yet been well characterized from the standpoint of its mechanical properties. To accommodate the noncohesive nature of this loose particulate form of bone, a triaxial compression test apparatus commonly used in engineering soil mechanics was adapted for the testing of fresh-frozen...
متن کاملInvestigation of Stress-Strain Behavior of Plastic Concrete Using Monotonic Triaxial Compression Tests
In this paper, the mechanical behavior of plastic concrete being used in the cut-off walls of earth dams has been studied. To do the task, triaxial compression tests on the specimens in various ages and mix designs under different confining pressures have been done and the stress-strain behavior of such materials and their strength parameter changes has been experimentally investigated. It has ...

the mechanical behaviour of rockfill materials and aggregates depends not only on particle size and compaction, but also on their strength and lithological properties. in this research two types of large triaxial and direct shear tests are performed on rockfill materials. this paper compares the stress-strain behaviour of sandstone and andesibasalt materials in triaxial compression tests (3006...

The rockfill structures are widely constructed throughout the world and rockfills are largely used in these structures as main materials or filler materials. In the crust of earth dams, the rockfill materials role is to stabilize the body of the dam, however, the behavior of these materials in Particular their shear strength is not fully understood. In this study, different tests have been cond...
متن کاملNumerical Investigation on the Reference Crushing Stress of Granular Materials in Triaxial Compression Test
Particle crushing dominates the deformation behaviour of granular materials under significantly high compressive and shear stress. A proposed constitutive model has been verified to predict crushing behaviour of granular materials with different crushability and adopted one kind of reference crushing stress. It is noted that no positive dilatancy of granular material in triaxial test occurs onc...
